Skopje, the capital of Macedonia in the Balkan peninsula, has been inhabited for over 4000 years. Archaeological digs found evidence of neolithic tools and habitations. In 148 BC, the city came under the government of the Roman empire. During the Roman empire, Skopje (or Scupi in Latin), became the seat of the provincial government in the Balkans. When the empire separated, the city moved into the Eastern empire.
